Agency techs are typically lower level, recent college grads, do not have much real world experience optimizing SEO, Local, or AdWords. I am a consultant with over 14 years of real world digital marketing experience.

Hiring an agency to manage AdWords account typically means the agency collect as a fee 6-10% of your monthly spend so there is zero incentive to look for opportunities to save you money.

Agencies will set-up and account and just “let it run.” This means they perform no optimization of keyword match types and usually just use a broad match instead of a broad modified, phrase or exact matches. A broad match keyword is the worst type of match and get very expensive with virtual no targeting.

Agencies do not invest time to create bid modifiers such as raise your bid 20% for mobile users which in 2019 are better converters. Agencies do not have the time or incentive to focus on your PPC.
